Baywood & Baywood Knolls > History

Baywood, one of the most quaint and beautiful residential communities on the San Francisco Peninsula, is located 23 miles south of San Francisco, 31 miles north of San Jose and west of downtown San Mateo.

Once part of the John Parrott estate and Pulgas Ranche, Baywood is a community of nearly four hundred distinctive period houses in all styles and sizes - including turn of the century Mediterranean, English Tudors, Mission revivals, French Normandies, Colonials, Cottage Bungalows, Art Deco and Early California ranches.

The original Baywood neighborhood dates back as far as 1927. It was surveyed and subdivided by George A. Kneese, a civil engineer from Redwood City. The subdivision was filed for record at the Hall of Records on May 16, 1927.

Baywood Knolls had its beginning just 13 years later. On July 30, 1940, owners, Pacific Title & Trust Company of San Francisco and W.S. Leadley received final approval for this tract of land.

Today, Baywood offers residents many amenities including; dramatic views of the city of San Francisco, the San Francisco Bay and surrounding hills of Skyline Boulevard, an easy commute access to highways 92, 101 and 280, and close proximity to downtown San Mateo.

Within walking distance are the San Mateo Public Library, Central Park, Bay Tree Park and many outstanding restaurants and shops. Additionally, the local public school system including Baywood Elementary, Borel Middle School and Aragon High School lead their respective districts in student academic performance and have all recently been renovated and modernized.
